Depot Bay
With the remaining guys, we took the weekend and went to Depot Bay, "the world’s smallest harbor." We had the good fortune of seeing the native grey whales that live year round in the area.
They were diving and showing their tails, their backs covered in barnacles and when in the very shallow water we could even watch them as they swam. The pups were well behaved in the hotel and we had not a single accident. Their favorite part of the trip, I think, was getting pet by everyone as we roamed up and down the paved bridge, past the shops down onto the docks.
My favorite thing, aside from the whale spotting, was the interaction with the harbor seals who kept coming in close to see what we were up to and eat the innards from the fish that the fishermen were gutting near the jetty. My daughters and mother enjoyed the salt water taffy made fresh on the spot, the same taffy I at with my grandparents when I was a kid and they were breeding dogs and we went on jaunts to the coast.
